Best Christmas UK staycation suggestions for 2020
Planning the best Christmas staycation in the UK? Here are my top 5 recommendations.
The announcement of a second lockdown by the U.K government last week means that we will be at home till early December. If you are like me you might desire a change of environment for Christmas, preferably a vacation that comes with the least hassle. To travel internationally most countries require COVID testing done and to observe some sort of quarantine. Therefore, an easy and more accessible getaway staycation within the UK seems to be the best Christmas plan.
But what exactly is a staycation? It’s basically a holiday within your own country. No flying involved, no need to cross any border or have passport involved in this kind of trip. It involves discovering local gems right underneath your nose. In theory these kinds of trips are stress-free and after the year we’ve had this seems like just what we need.
Here are my top 5 U.K staycation locations that I have been able to explore this year. I hope you are inspired to explore after lockdown and go get some much needed fresh air in a nearby city or town you would not have thought of exploring before:
1. Lake District – honestly the beauty of this place is absolutely unmatched. You just have to visit- it truly makes the perfect Christmas staycation. Recent research shows that over 36% of people believe that landscapes as beautiful as Britain’s couldn’t be found abroad and honestly no word of lie there. The Lake District is a wonderful place for you and your family to visit over the Christmas period – there is so much to see and do, ranging from winter walks to spying on the snow-peaked mountain, rusty-leaved woodlands and silently still lakes. You could even have your festive meals overlooking Lake Windermere. You could also explore the varied epic scenery close by or spend the time in your cosy cottage or hotel spa. This destination is all about maximum relaxation for your Christmas staycation.
Insider tip: Ambleside central location makes it a good base for your ultimate U.K Christmas staycation. Looking to get away from the crowd and be surrounded by mountains, head to Keswick. It is a pretty market town with heaps of character, which is also well positioned to explore the nearby valleys of Borrowdale and Buttermere too. Here you would be able to find the best of UK staycation outdoor winter activity.
2. Cotswolds – There is no shortage of cosy pubs, roaring fires, delicious treats, lovely winter walks, you legit would not want to be anywhere else. Not sure there would be any Christmas market held this year but do stay warm whilst exploring the countryside. This is the perfect location for those who want to fully immerse in the countryside vibe with so many pretty villages to choose from you are legit spoilt with so many I would recommend exploring a few of them; my favourites are Bourton-on-the-Water, Castle Combe and Stow-on-the-Wold.
Insider tip: To get into the festive spirit, you can seek out a luxury cottage adorned with traditional decorations and the aroma of mulled wine lulls you into a feeling of pure relaxation. Immerse yourself into your perfect staycation vibe.
3.Kent – is my second home. It contains a combination of vast, lush countryside, wide-open coastline, and very individual towns and cities that pulse with diversity and excitement. Seek and you will find whatever floats your holiday boat in Kent. I really believe it’s so underrated but there is honestly so much to do.
Insider tip: who said you can’t hit the beach for Christmas? Yes you can’t go there in your bathing suit but you sure can enjoy a very brisk walk. Are you still very much against it? Fine, I understand but just note that Kent is home to more than 50 beaches so there is plenty to choose from.
4. Dorset – consists of so many small picturesque pretty towns that just make exploring it so enjoyable. I especially love the coastal towns – my personal highlight was visiting Durdle Door I have seen images and heard about it several times but to see it in person was legit special. Why not gift yourself this Christmas a place you have heard about so many times but not had a chance to visit? Walking along the coastline really did help lift my spirit and lockdown 1.0 seemed like a distant memory. This is why this place makes the perfect staycation destination. It is worth checking out @TravelDorset Twitter account for any local updates so you are well informed before starting your staycation trip. I would recommend this destination to anyone who truly loves nature; Dorset is home to all sorts of wildlife and truly makes the perfect Christmas staycation getaway.
Insider tip: book an Airbnb holiday stay. Basically home away from home. I just love the rustic vibe of the place I stayed on and the views are just glorious. Here is the Airbnb that I booked. If this is the first time you are using Airbnb click here to get an extra discount. 5. Brecon Beacons is the perfect option if you are a lover of big green open spaces which offer miles and miles of wonderful walking paths. After the lockdown, if you feel you need some fresh air and just need a change of environment then this is the perfect location for you. I personally loved visiting the waterfalls and caves especially the one that Batman the movie was shot in. Other activities I would recommending doing are horse riding, hiking, canoeing, rock climbing and abseiling, stargazing – on a clear night in Brecon Beacon you can see the Milky Way and even meteor showers. Personally, I think the pace of this location is amazing for writers and artists who just want to take long walks and clear your head and be surrounded with infinite beauty and a perfect Christmas getaway.
Insider tip: due to COVID – before travelling, please check attractions are open and ready to welcome you by checking their social media channels, website, or by calling or emailing them directly.
